A Supervisor is an essential force in any organization. You have a powerful effect - good or bad - on the productivity of the people who work for you. You are the crucial link between the employee on the shop floor or at the desk, and management. Employees look to you to meet their job needs, and even some of their personal ones. Both groups require your leadership to get the job done.

The UNSSC in partnership with the Institute for Leadership Excellence & Development, Inc., designed this instructor-led online course to enable Managers and Team Leaders to achieve results through the productive leadership of others, and to develop an efficient workplace environment. Participants will strengthen their conflict-management skills and learn how to become more effective in influencing others.

Administrative assistants have to cover different roles, are constantly juggling a wide array of tasks and have to deal with many people on a daily basis. They are the backbone of any organization and office, especially in the UN context where staff turnover often occurs. This course provides participants with tools, templates and techniques to greatly increase productivity and effectiveness on the workplace. It is about working to the best of the abilities, and encouraging, in turn, the best in those who work in the same office environment.

The course is designed and delivered in partnership with the Institute for Leadership, Excellence & Development, Inc., which works with business professionals around the world who want to improve their ability to deliver projects and lead teams.

A workshop focused on using coaching techniques to help managers reach individual and organizational goals and provide reflection on what support leaders themselves need. FOCUS/APPROACH This workshop will enable managers to understand how to review and build the context, strategy, culture and processes for coaching and mentoring at a senior and strategic level. It will provide an opportunity to understand what coaching and mentoring involves and the impact it can have on performance. It will also focus on developing more self-awareness by exploring managers’ values, emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills as well as their communication skills, so as to assess and develop their abilities as a coach or mentor. It aims to examine the competencies required to explore how to get the most out of coaching and develop strategic approaches for individual and team transitions. The workshop will examine how coaching can be used effectively to assist individuals to adapt to sometimes difficult and challenging work environments and how managers can use coaching techniques to develop pragmatic approaches that lead to identifying solutions and embracing opportunities with more confidence. All participants will have an opportunity to have a short coaching session with the workshop facilitator. The aim of the workshop is to enable participants to: • reflect on their own leadership styles with the intention of enhancing their effectiveness as leaders of teams; • gain theoretical and pragmatic insights into the basics of “coaching” and its application to their own leadership style; • enhance their capability to engage more meaningfully with their team members and direct reports for superior performance and business impact; • provide an opportunity for senior leadership teams to identify the skills and capacities needed to manage, mentor and nurture talent, especially more junior members of the staff. WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to identify how they can incorporate a coaching approach to raise the performance levels and effectiveness of their teams, and discover what coaching skills are an essential component of the work of managers and leaders in all types of organizations. They will learn to: • Understand what skills are required to become a successful coach such as active listening and giving feedback by practicing coaching; • Determine what competencies are key for coaches; • Appraise different coaching methods; • Identify when to use coaching or mentoring, rather than other learning options; • Use the principles of coaching and mentoring in their current work environment.
The EMERGE Programme blends individual, pair and group activities over a 9-month period. Raising self-awareness on individual strengths, career development needs and biases provide the starting point of this development journey. Two workshops, offered at the beginning and at midterm of the programme, are intended for skills building and for creating  a network amongst the participants. In between workshops individual coaching sessions provide an opportunity to continue working towards development goals and address challenges. During a final stage, participants are guided by a mentor from within their own entity in implementing their individual development plan.

The Programme is an example of inter-agency collaboration explicitly aligned to the goal of reaching gender parity in the UN system.
